I need help finding some music composing software for secret reasons that are secret and are also reasons. Preferably free because I'm broke.

Anybody knowing of anything user-friendly that can be downloaded onto, also preferably, a computer that runs Mac OS X? It doesn't HAVE TO run on Mac; it's not like I don't have Windows installed on here too. It's just highly preferred.

I have no idea where to even begin my search. <_> Halp.

Thanks.

Does this Mac somehow not already have Garageband on it?

I have it, it's just it's sort of clunky, it doesn't seem like I'm able to actually write the proper notes into the score, and I can't really figure out how to save what I make as anything other than .band format anyways.

Tutorials, yo. It's a simple program, and you're not going to find a better one for free. You already have it, so you might as well learn it.

I once used LMMS [link] to make a quick tune for a game. I don't have any experience with this kind of program, so the fact I could get anything out of it suggests it should be pretty user-friendly. It's also free, so no worries about the price.

It's described as "cross-platform," but having had a quick glance around it doesn't sound like it's easy to install on a Mac (though it's certainly possible). It might be worth installing it on Windows first just to see if it's suitable for what you want to do.

There's this midi-making program my old band director used called Noteworthy Composer. It's nothing too fancy, but it may get you on the right track. ^^;

There's also a program called Audacity that you can use to record and alter sounds. I've seen people do some pretty legit stuff with that one.

I hope that helps, and good luck with your secret project. :)

You can try JamStudio: [link]
...I think it might be more beat-centralized rather than like..."music" music, but..idk what you're really looking for, maybe it could help out.

That's SORTA what I'm looking for, but not quite, heh.

I need something for like, full blown animation, where there will only be music to correspond with what's happening in the short. No talking, no real sound effects, just music to help with the mood and stuff. I kinda need to be able to custom do things for that, so I can compose and time the music in coordination with my storyboards and such.

I knew it was going to be animation related

I believe you can do that on JamStudio if you spend enough time messing around with it. I have a cousin who uses it and she's made some great melodies with different instruments, you don't have to add voices. But then again, she used it back when there was a much wider range of instruments/options to choose from, now I think they make you pay for the full range of stuff they have, or maybe you just have to make an account

Either way, hope you find something that works for you!

Heh, no, no, not stock music, but software where I can actually create and compose my own.

Thank you though. c:
